Keeping your child safe

There is nothing more important to us, than the safety & welfare of all the children who attend the 1st Hexham Scout Group. The Scout Association has a Child protection policy in place for all adults in Scouting to follow, & it is the policy of the Scout association & the 1st Hexham Scout Group, to safeguard the welfare of all members by protecting them from physical, sexual,emotional harm,& neglect.

Accordingly the Scout Association is committed to :

Taking into account in all its considerations and activities the interests and well being of young people.

Respecting the rights, wishes & feelings of the young people with whom it is working.

Taking all reasonable practicable steps to protect them from physical, sexual, neglect & emotional harm

Promoting the welfare of young people and their protection within a relationship of trust.

Anti Bullying Policy

"Children have the right to protection from all forms of violence (physical or mental). They must be kept safe from harm and they must be given proper care by those looking after them" (The United Nations Convention on the rights of the child article 19)

The Scout Association is committed to this ethos and seeks to ensure, as far as is reasonably practical, the prevention of all forms of bullying among members. To this end all Scouting activities should have in place rigorous anti bullying strategies.

Leaders Code of Conduct

All leaders in the Scout Association are supplied with the "Yellow Card", which contains guidelines on a code of behaviour when dealing with young people. For parents information, a copy of this card can be downloaded by clicking on the link below.

Young people thrive in safe surroundings. We’re committed to ensuring that Scouting is both enjoyable and safe for everyone who takes part, along with providing parents with peace of mind.

Appointing those who work with young people

All volunteers who help to run our activities give their time freely to help young people enjoy Scouting.

Leaders are interviewed locally and asked to provide references. Everyone working with young people in Scouting is asked to undertake a Criminal Record Check.

Code of behaviour

We have a clear code of behaviour which is given to all adults working in Scouting, regardless of their role. This is also included in the training that leaders receive and offers advice about how young people should be treated. We expect everyone to follow it.

If you volunteer to help out with an activity, you’ll be given one too, and if you would like to see a copy of the code of behaviour for adults, just ask any of your child’s leaders or visit the safeguarding area of our website.

Training

We expect all leaders to take courses in basic first aid and child protection. Special training is provided for those taking young people away on residential events like camps and sleepovers & full training is given to leaders in line with their role, leading to the awarding of the leaders wood badge upon completion of their training programme.

Outings and camps

All leaders taking young people on outings or camps will give you notice in writing, ask for your permission and provide you with a method of contacting the group while they are away.

We will never ask to take individual young people away on their own or without another adult being present.

What to do if you have concerns

If you are unhappy with anything relating to your child’s time in Scouting you should raise it with your child’s leaders. If you would rather speak to someone else, please contact the Scout Information Centre on 0845 300 1818.
